Shroud lizard is a fearsome creature

The lamellar lizard is a reptile from the family of the agamic suborder of the lizard of the squamous order.

Appearance of the lizard lizard

The body of the lizard may have a dark gray or pinkish color. The whole body of the animal is covered with scales. On the back and tail there is a pattern in the form of transverse stripes. This pattern stands out more strongly in young individuals.

Around the neck of the lacquered lizard is a kind of leathery membrane, its appearance resembling a cloak. Thanks to this detail, this species of lizards got its name. This collar is dismembered under the throat and interrupted near the top of the neck. Closer to the edges, the collar skin becomes thicker.

The shape of this "cloak" is supported by two cartilaginous outgrowths of the hyoid bone. When the muscles supporting these cartilage outgrowths relax, the cloak lowers. In the case of tension of these muscles, the cloak, respectively, rises. Usually this collar is down and does not catch the eye. In males, the collar is painted in bright colors, which not only helps them scare off ill-wishers, but also helps to attract the attention of females in the breeding season.

Also, this cloak is directly involved in thermoregulation. At high ambient temperatures, it creates an additional area for cooling the body, and in the absence of sun or in the morning it helps to better capture the sun's rays and, accordingly, heat the body of the animal.

Habitat and habitat of the lizard lizard

The natural habitat of this reptile is located in South Guinea, as well as in Northwest and Northern Australia.

Within the range, the lizard is found in woodlands, hot woodlands, as well as in savannas overgrown with trees and shrubs.

Lifestyle and nutrition of the lizard lizard

The lizard spends almost all the time on trees, however, in search of prey, it can go down to the ground. As a rule, small reptiles, invertebrates and mammals become this prey.

The birthplace of the lizard lizard is Australia and New Guinea.

The way to hunt this lizard is to wait patiently for its prey. During a drought, when there is an acute shortage of food, the lizard is able to climb into the crowns of trees and wait there for about 3 months. The fact is that in the shade of a tree in conditions of lack of heat, the metabolism of this animal is reduced by 70%.

In the open area, the lizard lizard has a lot of enemies. These are various types of cats, snakes and even birds of prey. Under these conditions, the lizard has developed its own special protection system. Seeing the enemy, the lizard freezes, trying to hide and go unnoticed by the enemy. If this does not work, the animal proceeds to the second stage, namely, hisses and opens its collar, as well as twists its tail and rises to its hind limbs. As a rule, the enemy is lost and retreats.

In case of danger, the lizard opens its mouth, protrudes its bright collar, stands on its hind legs, beats its tail on the ground and hisses loudly.

If these measures are also in vain, the lizard lizard retreats. She quickly runs away on her hind legs, while maintaining balance with the help of her long tail.

Breeding lizard lizards

In these lizards, the breeding season begins with the arrival of a warm, wet season. In nature, females begin to breed from about two years of age, and males from one year of age. Mating is preceded by mating games, during which the male tries to attract the female with special head movements, similar to nods.

After mating, the female lays 8 to 14 eggs in moist sand. The incubation period lasts for about ten weeks, after which offspring are born.

Another purpose of the protruding collar of the lizard-like lizard is to regulate body temperature.

Content lizard lizards

These lizards can be kept singly or in small groups. It is worth remembering that the lizard-like lizards are territorial animals. For this reason, two males cannot be placed in the same terrarium. The terrarium for the content of these lizards should be quite spacious. It should be located in a quiet place where there is no strong vibration and sharp loud sounds.

The terrarium for this lizard can be either cubic or vertical type. To maintain two individuals, a terrarium 2.4 x 2.4 x 2.4 m high is required. For each additional individual, the volume of the terrarium should be increased by 20%. It is also advisable to place a pool of warm water in the terrarium for regular bathing of lizards.

In the morning, a lizard-like lizard catches the sun's rays with its hood, and with severe overheating, it helps the lizard cool.

Lighting and humidity

To produce the proper amount of vitamin D in the body of the lizard, the terrarium must be equipped with special lamps that emit the full spectrum of UVB radiation. Such lamps should be placed at a height of about 30 cm above the lizards, as their efficiency decreases as the distance increases. These lamps must be replaced every year.

To maintain the optimum level of relative humidity (50 - 70%) it is necessary to spray the terrarium twice a day, or install a special sprinkler.

Placiferous lizards are fed with insects, spiders, small mammals and other lizards.

Temperature of the lizard lizard

The temperature throughout the terrarium should be 24 - 27 ° C, and at the warming point 35 - 38 ° C. This temperature regime is very important for the life of lacrimal lizards, since they are cold-blooded animals and need external regulation of body temperature. At night, the temperature in the terrarium should not be less than 20 ° C. To heat the terrarium, use special night lamps or ceramic heaters.

It will not be superfluous to install a special thermometer in the terrarium, the readings of which will display the temperature in various parts of the terrarium. This will allow you to timely notice the inconsistency of the current temperature with the norms and adjust the heating devices. Also, for automatic temperature control, you can install a special thermostat.
