In captivity, a person should take care of this. The main rule for keeping most pets is access to fresh drinking water. You can either get a drinker at any pet store or do it yourself.

Types of drinkers

Location are external and internal. External are fixed outside the cell and do not take up useful area. Water enters the cell through a special nozzle. The internal ones are attached directly to the cell.

By design, they distinguish:

  • Nipple drinkers;
  • Vacuum drinkers;
  • Floor drinking bowls;
  • Bottle;
  • Ball drinkers;

Nipple drinkers are based on the spring mechanism of water supply. Thanks to what water does not leak. Vacuum drinkers are a pan with a sufficiently high side and a narrow vessel or flask with water fixed on top. As the water in the pan decreases, water automatically flows from the flask. Vacuum drinkers can also be referred to as floor drinkers, but most often they are ordinary open drinkers with a high side.

Bottle drinkers are commonly used for birds. They consist of a tank with water and a pocket where water accumulates. Ball drinking bowl is very convenient and practical to use. Water enters the pet if he presses the tongue onto the ball at the end of the fixed solid tube. Of the home-made drinkers, the most common are:

  1. Nipple.
  2. Floor.
  3. Water Bottle.

How to make a do-it-yourself drinker

It is quite easy and fast! You don’t have to buy materials specifically, you probably already have everything you need at home. Below are the most popular types of drinking bowls that you can build yourself.

Nipple drinker

It is an automatic variant of water supply to the animal. In order to make a drinker in a small cage you will need:

  1. Ballpoint pen housing. It’s better to take a transparent one from under the cheapest pen. It will allow you to visually control the process of water supply. Such a case is also ideal in shape.
  2. Fountain Pen Spring
  3. A plastic bottle of the required volume.
  4. Small metal ball made of bearings. Make sure that it passes into the handle housing.
  5. Hacksaw

We lower the ball into the handle body so that it freely falls down. In the vertical position, with a pencil or marker, make a mark at the level where the ball is stuck. Hacksaw to saw off part of the mark. Next, you need to clean the resulting hole from the remnants of glass.

Important! If you have a Dzungarian hamster, then this is almost the only suitable type of drinking bowl. Others will be flipped and blurred. As a result, they will not be able to fulfill their function.

Make sure that the cavity is easily and unhindered.. Again, we throw the ball into the already sawn handle body. We look at how much distance is left to file so that the ball pops out of the housing by about 1-1.5 mm. A spring is mounted on top of the ball. Pressed by a small wooden peg.

It is important that water can pass through it. Then the design with the nipple is inserted into the lid of the plastic bottle, with a pre-made hole. The resulting structure is suspended. There is also an option for a nipple drinker, when the handle is inserted into the side of the bottle at an angle, secured with superglue. In this case, it is possible not to suspend, but to install cages on the floor.

Floor drinking bowl

It practically does not require time and effort to manufacture.

You will need:

  • Any tank with a high side.
  • Wooden block.
  • Super glue.

Important! Do not pick up the cropped portion of the plastic bottles, as the animal may cut into sharp edges. Or, if there are no other materials at hand, try singeing the sharp sides after holding a couple of moments over the fire.

All that is needed is to attach the container to a wooden block. You can install two cups at once. Feed will be poured into one of them, and water into the other. Remember that you need to timely change the water in the cage of the pet and be sure to monitor the cleanliness of the drinker.

Plastic bottle drinker

Suitable for large rodents, because they drink a lot and often. You will need:

  1. 0.5 L bottle
  2. Bend for juice with a bend
  3. Awl or nail
  4. Fastening rope

Inspect the bottle, remove all stickers. Make sure it is clean. Rinse several times with soda solution or plain water.It is necessary to make a hole in the center of the plastic cover with an awl or a nail. It should be smaller in diameter than the tube. This will ensure the tightness of the drinker. Next, insert the tube and put on the bottle.

The drinker is ready! Fix it in such a way that your pet reaches the duct and drinks water freely. Such a drinker will still let in more water than necessary, but you can solve the problem simply by substituting a saucer under it.

Important! Mark the surface of the bottle with a marker. So you can control the amount of water that the hamster consumes and be sure that it is not thirsty.

Rinse the drinker periodically with soda solution, and also clean the walls with a sponge or brush. This is necessary to prevent the formation of algae or alkaline deposits, if the water is hard.

How to teach a hamster to a drinker

It is more convenient and practical to use a nipple drinker, as it eliminates pollution and allows the animal to drink as needed. Typically, hamsters cope with the task of detecting water. But in some cases there are problems with this.

It will also be interesting:

To begin with, it's worth figuring out why a hamster does not drink water?

  • The animal simply does not know or does not know how to use the device.
  • All necessary moisture gets in abundance with wet food.
  • Water is not fresh

It must be remembered that the native desert for hamsters does not abound in water. Over the years of evolution, their body has adapted to receive moisture from food. If you notice that your pet does not drink much - do not be alarmed, this is normal. However, you should not think that he can do without water at all.

After you bring the hamster home for the first time and put it in a cage, give it time to adapt. He must study space himself. If a calm atmosphere is created for the animal, then he will naturally discover water himself. Simply poking her nose.

Important! The cell must constantly have access to clean and fresh water, which changes daily, regardless of the amount consumed.

If the animal does not find water for quite some time on its own, and at the same time you have developed a trusting relationship with it, then you can carefully pick it up in your hands and bring it with your nose to the water. It’s good if droplets get on it. That method works great with a Syrian hamster, but is almost useless with a Dzungarian hamster.

To attract the attention of the dzhungarik, you should coat the edge of the drinking bowl, where the water enters is something pleasant for the animal. The smell of his favorite food or treat is quite suitable. For example, cucumber. After that, you should be patient and wait. The animal will find the path to water by smell. Interestingly, Jungar hamsters can drink only 2-3 ml per day. water. They also do this at night.

A metal ball in a nipple drinker rusts over time. This poses a danger to the life and health of the animal. Carefully monitor the health of the drinkers. Dzhungarik can drink only 2 ml of water per day, if the capacity of the drinker is 50 ml, it will be imperceptible. The owner may simply not see how hamsters drink, as this happens in the midst of night activity.

Some hamsters are so smart that they just need to demonstrate how to use the drinker. You can bring the animal to the drinker, click on it so that a few drops of water get straight to the muzzle. This is enough for the pet to act on its own in the future.

How often to refresh water

Water in the drinker changes daily. It doesn’t matter if the hamster has had time to drink all the water or not. Otherwise, you risk exposing the pet to illness. In summer, water should be changed two three times a day, in winter and autumn at least once a day. It is important to raise the issue of water regime for newborn babies.

They are still not able to reach the automatic drinker, so a small saucer is the best. The water in it needs to be changed every 3-4 hours. In order for your pet to be healthy and cheerful, he needs good care. Providing clean, fresh water is one way to take care of your pet. You can buy, or you can build a simple drinking bowl yourself.
